The Wi-Fi feature on dashcams allows users to connect their dashcam to a smartphone through a Wi-Fi connection. This enables easy transfer and viewing of footage, as well as the ability to adjust settings using a smartphone app. With Wi-Fi connected, you can instantly share footage with family, friends, insurer, or the police just on site. If necessary, you can also easily share videos via social media like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

The Wi-Fi connection is set up directly between the dashcam and the smartphone, no mobile data or Wi-Fi hotspot is required, which is similar to a Bluetooth connection.

Benefits of Wi-Fi Feature on Dashcams

The Wi-Fi feature on dashcams offers several benefits, including:

1. Convenient access to footage

You can easily transfer footage files from the dashcam to your smartphone without having to remove the camera or the SD card from your vehicle, saving your time and effort. However, dashcams without this feature require users to manually remove the memory card, which can be easy to lose.

2. Useful in an incident

When you're involved in an incident, you can quickly review the footage to see exactly what happened on the spot. Instead of waiting to access a PC, you can instantly download and send relevant footage evidence to your insurer or law enforcement using your mobile phone.

3. Simpler setting changes

You can control certain dashcam functions and settings using a smartphone app, without having to physically reach the device.

Overall, the Wi-Fi feature on dashcams provides added convenience and flexibility for accessing and managing footage.

Differences between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi networks can operate on two frequency bands, 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The main difference between them is the frequency used to transmit data.

2.4GHz Wi-Fi

Pros: Larger range, better ability to penetrate solid objects

Cons: Lower data transfer rate, more susceptible to interference as more devices using this frequency

5GHz Wi-Fi

Pros: Higher data transfer rate, less susceptible to interference as fewer devices using this frequency

Cons: Smaller range (except 802.11ac), worse ability to penetrate solid objects

%E5%8D%9A%E5%AE%A24.jpg

The 2.4GHz band has a longer range but is more susceptible to interference from other devices that use the same frequency. As a result, it can only support a lower data transfer rate.

On the other hand, the 5GHz band operates at a higher frequency and has a shorter range than 2.4GHz. However, it provides a faster data transfer rate and is less likely to experience interference from other devices. One exception to this is 5GHz 802.11ac (a Wi-Fi standard), which, under the right conditions, can achieve a range coverage nearly equal to that of 2.4GHz.

VIOFO 4X Faster 5GHz Wi-Fi

VIOFO dashcams support built-in single-band 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or dual-band Wi-Fi. The dual-band Wi-Fi offers 802.11n 2.4GHz and 802.11ac 5GHz Wi-Fi, you can select which Wi-Fi band to use based on actual needs.

(Please note that your phone needs to stay within 10 meters range when accessing the dash cam through the App.)

As mentioned previously, 5GHz 802.11ac WiFi can achieve an equal range to 2.4GHz. The transfer speed is the main difference between our dashcams’ 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. The 5GHz Wi-Fi feature on our dashcams provides ultra-fast transfer, which is 4 times faster than 2.4GHz. It only takes approximately 20 seconds to download a one-minute 4K resolution video using 5GHz Wi-Fi (according to data from VIOFO R&D Center).

%E5%8D%9A%E5%AE%A25.jpg

The Wi-Fi transfer speed can be influenced by the processing power of your smartphone. iOS and Android systems may exhibit slight variations in Wi-Fi speed. If your smartphone is underpowered or running resource-intensive tasks concurrently, it can also adversely affect file transfer speed.

Final Thoughts

The 5GHz Wi-Fi offers enhanced transfer performance, making it a great choice. We all appreciate time-saving solutions. Opt for a 5GHz Wi-Fi to significantly speed up your file transfer workflow. With the VIOFO app, you can conveniently transfer files and preview them directly on your phone.

Most dashcams on the market only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. However, we are committed to providing high-quality dashcams and services, and keeping up with the latest technology. Last year, we were the first to use the latest Sony STARVIS 2 tech in our A139PRO, which became the first real 4K 3CH dashcam on the market and also supports 5GHz Wi-Fi. For your reference, here is the link to the A139PRO:

Most recently, we introduced the groundbreaking A119 MINI 2, VIOFO’s first dashcam featuring Voice Control function. It is also equipped with the newest Sony STARVIS 2 sensor and 5GHz Wi-Fi, providing exceptional performance. For more information, you can refer to the A119 MINI 2 using this link:
